Barritt’s Bermuda Getaway Recipe Contest

This year, Barritt’s Ginger Beer held an international competition to see who could create the “next great Barritt’s cocktail.”  The grand prize was an all expense paid trip for two to Bermuda.  Over a two month period, 200 experts and novices entered their original creations in the contest.  A panel of four judges narrowed the list down to 20 finalists and the winner was announced at Rum Renaissance in Miami.

There were some interesting entries.  Bizarre ingredients and techniques were used by some and more ordinary combinations by others.  After a live judging session in Miami, there were two drinks that stood out and took the prize.  Here they are:

.

Consumer Winner:  ”Storm Warning” by Lawrence Spies from Texas.

The drink is 3-4 oz Barritt’s Ginger Beer, 2 oz. Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, 2 oz. Domaine du Canton with a garnish of a lime or lemon wedge.

Instructions: fill tall glass with ice and add 2 oz. Golsing’s, 2 oz. Domaine du Canton, and top with Barritt’s Ginger Beer. Serve in highball glass.

.
Retailer Winner:  ”Sake Blossom” by Sam McDaniel from Illinois.

It calls for 2 oz. of Barritt’s Ginger Beer, 1 oz Clement Creole Shrubb Clementine Orange Liqueur, 1 oz sparkling cava, 1 oz. junmai gingo sake, .5 oz lemongrass simple syrup, 1 strawberry diced, 1 orange blossom (garnish).

Instructions: muddle diced strawberry, lemongrass simple syrup and sake in a shaker. Strain into champagne flute. Add Barritt’s, Cava and Clement Creole Shrubb Clementine Orange Liqueur slowly to the champagne flute. Serve in champagne flute.
