In this clip you’ll see Edinburgh-based master mixologist David Cordoba making a classic Cuban cocktail, the El Presidente. David is well known for perfect cocktails crafted with flair and enthusiasm. If you ever find yourself in Scotland, track him down and enjoy the show.
Here’s his brief description of the origin of the El Presidente.
A strange affair split between two stories and styles. The first is accredited to Cuban President Mario Garcia Menocal who at some point during his term of office (1913 – 1921) asked Constante Ribalaigua, the bartender at the La Floridita Bar, to create something that would rival the American Manhattan cocktail. He then modestly named the drink after himself. It is sometimes known as a ‘dulce’ or sweet version and became the number one cocktail on the Havana social scene.
