Say hello to Pavol Kazimir, a well known Dominican Republic-based cane spirits specialist. Here’s our interview.
I sampled rum several years before I moved to the Dominican Republic from Slovakia. Back then I didn’t know I would actually move to the Caribbean; it was interesting. However, the real interest came after moving to the Dominican Republic and experiencing real rum culture.
How many rums are in your collection?
Because of my travels I have only a limited amount of bottles available. I have all the rums from Dominican Republic of course, but every time I move I have to organize a goodbye party to drink it all up with friends and then start collecting again.
What is your favorite rum (or rums) in each category and why?
I try to enjoy every rum in my glass. If we talk about concrete brands, I enjoy Brugal 1888 and Pusser’s Navy Rum.
Do you have a favorite rum bar?
My favorite rum bar would be Pat’e Palo European Brasserie in the Dominican Republic. I work there and am pushing for all Dominican Rums to be available. I haven’t found a selection of rums as extensive anywhere in the country.
What is your regular cocktail?
I start my evenings with an 1888 Rum Manhattan.
Where is the best place to buy rum in your area?
Since I live on an island it is hard to get ahold of non-DR local brands. Some are available in local supermarkets.
Which rum would you travel to buy?
Pusser’s Navy Rum. I have great memories on that rum.
How long have you worked at Pat’e Palo European Brasserie and what is your focus?
Since September 2011 and I focus on Internet Marketing and Bar Consulting.
What should we watch out for from you in the coming year?
My latest project is The Dominican Rum Guide website. Check it out for information about DR rums and culture.

Best ideas come while sipping rum.
