Bahama Bob Leonard is a legendary Key West bartender, cane spirits promoter and rum lifestyle blogger. Over a few drinks, we got a chance to talk shop.
How and when did you become interested in rum?
I had my first sip in 1968. Traveling the islands has opened my eyes to the sheer number of brands, flavors and diversity of rum.
How many rums are in your collection?
60-100 (depending on the day)
What is your favorite rum (or rums) in each category and why?
El Dorado 12 & 15, Matusalem 15, RL Seale, Angostura 1919 & 1824, the entire Plantation line, Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva and a few others.
Do you have a favorite rum bar?
I’m prejudiced. I like the Rum Bar in Key West (I work there), but Hurricane Hole on Stock Island is my watering hole.
What is your regular cocktail?
Rum & Tonic for a low cal. drink, but I also like a Goombay Smash, Painkillers and Mojitos.
Where is the best place to buy rum in your area?
In Key West, Walgreens and Winn Dixie Grocery Market have a surprisingly good selection. I also frequent Conch Republic and Bone Island Liquors for special rums.
Which rum would you travel to buy?
All of them!
When did you launch BahamaBobLeonard.com and what is your focus?
I launched the blog on January 1st, 2011 to share the experiences of a Rumstylin’ fool (me) that really loves life.
What should we watch out for from Bahama Bob in the coming year?
I’m sort of recreating myself on a regular basis these days. I’m having fun meeting new people, seeing new places and living life in a way that I can take the road less traveled.
Words of wisdom….etc….
I’ve always felt like anything goes in life, as long as nobody gets hurt. Living life to its fullest and never saying “If I had only…..” Thank you Jimmy Buffett!
