Other than the occasional well-stocked hotel lobby bar, Washington DC can be a bit of a rum wasteland. Well, not any more. Soussi enters the scene.
This laid-back spot at the bottom of 18th Street in Adams Morgan has a very hip Moroccan feel. The lighting is dim and the decor very simple. The bar area is a lively spot for area professionals to mingle over cocktails while the upstairs lounge caters to hookah smokers. The large outdoor deck is a perfect spot to people watch during good weather and on weekends.
The rum selection at Soussi is only about 20 bottles deep, but they’re all worth a try. The more memorable offerings were Prichard’s Fine Rum, Brugal Anejo and Extra Viejo, Railean XO, Pyrat XO, Zaya Gran Reserva (Guatemalan), El Dorado 15, Mount Gay XO, 1703 and a commemorative blend of MG that I’ve never seen in a bar before.
If you’re looking for a well mixed cocktail, talk to Wilmot, one of Soussi’s very knowledgeable bartenders. He’s a true artist behind the bar and has mastered traditional cocktail mixing as well as created several of his own concoctions that you must try.
Whether Soussi is your local neighborhood hangout or just one stop on a night bar-hopping in DC, it’s definitely worth a visit. Tell them you heard about the place on Rum Connection.com. This holds absolutely no clout with them, but may score me a free drink next time I stop in. Cheers!
