New Expressions at Down Island Spirits

DOWN ISLAND SPIRITS ADDS TWO NEW EXPRESSIONS TO THEIR LINE OF SINGLE CASK RUMS.

Miami, FL JUNE, 2023 – On the heels of their successful inaugural releases, Down Island Spirits is set to launch two new additions to their sought after line of single cask rums.  The latest expressions hail from Brazil and Martinique, and bring a wild array of fresh aromas and flavors.

Martinique 2017 and Brazil 2011, the latest expressions from Down Island Spirits

“We were thrilled by the reception of our first four rum bottlings late last year,” said Mike Streeter, the founder and owner of Down Island Spirits.  “Our brand aims to truly add to the availability of top-quality cane spirits in the US and we feel that our latest casks from Martinique and Brazil will do just that.  They are both exceptionally flavorful rums made by distilleries who have a long history of excellence in the industry.”

Down Island’s 100% cane juice bottling from Martinique was column distilled in 2017 at a well-established distillery in Sainte-Marie, a rural community on the French-Caribbean island.  It was aged for 6 years in once-used Bourbon casks and bottled in Florida without the use of additives, coloring or filtration.  Like the rest of the Down Island Spirits collection, this expression is bottled at cask strength, 58% abv.

On the nose, fresh aromas of ripe apples, black pepper and musty brine dominate the Martinique 2017, followed by more subtle earthy notes and oak.  On the palate, a play of cinnamon, black pepper, grass, vanilla and lemongrass dance on the tongue followed by a finish of allspice, tea and tobacco.

The Brazil Rum bottling from Down Island Spirits was column distilled in Sao Roque at Epris Distillery in 2011.  It is an 80/20 blend of cane juice and molasses rum that was aged for 6 years in Amburana wood barrels and an additional 6 years in American Oak.  It is free of additives, coloring and filtration, and was bottled at cask strength, 55.1% abv.

The aroma of Brazil 2011 is full of lovely floral and tropical fruit notes with distinct black pepper, spice and brown sugar in the back.  The spice punch of the Amburana wood comes forward on the palate and is well-balance with notes of pineapple, breakfast syrup and burnt ginger.  The finish is a lovely frisk of Amburana spice, cloves and a hint of anise.

The new Down Island Spirits expressions have garnered early buzz from collectors and enthusiasts due to their origin and overall unique nature of the distillate. “We have been fortunate to draw a loyal group of fans and friends from these very early days of our brand,” said Streeter.  “We think that our Brazil and Martinique rums will meet and hopefully exceed the high expectations of our customer base.  Early feedback has been incredible.”

Distribution for Down Island Spirits currently focuses on Florida and Massachusetts with New York, Texas and California expansion in the works for late 2023/24.  Online retail orders and shipping to 40+ states is available at downislandspirits.com.

Rum Fire Rises in Seattle

Rum Fire Jamaican Overproof Rum is launching in one of the west coast’s hottest rum markets, Seattle. Wait..huh?! Known by many as the city of Starbucks, Microsoft and Amazon, it has been gaining more and more attention for its cocktail bars and more importantly, rum scene.

imagePerhaps it’s the weather that keeps people inside bars drinking away feelings associated with so many gray, rain filled skies that drives this market? However, Seattle is also home of the longest-running rum society in US, The Rum Collective and this just might have something to do with it too. Nick Feris, its founder, gives us the story. Several years ago, he visited the historic Hampden Estate Distillery in Jamaica where Rum Fire is made. He wrote about his experience and he tells us, “I always hoped for it to find its way up to the Northwest, but that day never came.” He tells us it was like a “continually frustrating long-distance love affair.” Recently, Nick reached out to the brand and did something about it. Nick says, “Today, Seattle and its surrounds have great cocktail bars like Rob Roy, Liberty, Canon, 99 Park, La Isla, etc. that care about quality rum. We now also have some pretty awesome bars that specialize in Rum, like Rumba and Tacoma Cabana. This market is ripe for Rum Fire and it will be well-received here.”

Rum Fire has a long unique fermentation and is 100% pot still rum giving it’s bold funky flavor. This rum is bottled at 126 proof and it packs a punch!

Next Generation No. 1

The House of Angostura launches a new limited edition rum in the exclusive Cask Collection range

____________________________________

imageKnown for their iconic bitters and rum‐making heritage, the House of Angostura – with the only rum distillery in Trinidad today ‐ announces the release of No. 1 Once Used French Oak, the second edition of The Cask Collection – a limited‐edition range dedicated to rums aged in special casks.

“The Cask Collection limited edition range is a celebration of the House of Angostura’s rich heritage and artistry in blending some of the world’s finest rums. We’re thrilled to share the second edition to the range – No. 1 Once Used French Oak ‐ with rum aficionados and enthusiasts worldwide to show that the craft of rum‐making has no boundaries.” – Master Distiller, John Georges

Bottled at 40% and the first Angostura rum finished in French oak casks, No. 1 Once Used French Oak is an exquisite, silky smooth complex blend – created with a fusion of techniques learnt from the Old World and perfected in the New World. Only 15,030 bottles will be available in Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and the USA in autumn 2015.

The No. 1 name conveys the spirit of the rum being one‐of‐a‐kind. Each limited edition introduced into the range offers the recipient a joyous experience, one that can’t be replicated after the bottles have been sold. For this reason, The House of Angostura has chosen to name every new release No. 1, paired with a sub‐title that states the special cask used to mature the blends.

No. 1 Once Used French Oak is a 16 year old blend. The rums were aged for a minimum of 10 years in American Oak casks. The rums were then artfully combined by The House of Angostura’s Master Blender and re‐casked into carefully selected French Oak casks that were once used for aging cognac. The rum was left to mature for additional 6 years in the French Oak casks. The French Oak barrels infuse the luxurious oak‐driven flavours of nuts, dried fruit such as dates and figs with subtle floral qualities.

“The overwhelming response we received to the first No. 1 released in 2013 was a strong indication of the appetite our consumers have for artisan spirits, which the House of Angostura is passionately committed to offering. No. 1 Once Used French Oak is an outstanding example of the tradition, philosophy and talents of the House of Angostura,” said Genevieve Jodhan, Executive Manager, International Sales & Marketing.

Blending rum is an art ‐ acquired from years of experience. Angostura’s blenders have been trained on original traditions and are celebrated experts who closely maintain guarded formulas and techniques. For No. 1 Once Used French Oak, Angostura produced a one‐of‐a‐kind recipe with mature, high‐quality aged rums ‐ each chosen for their unique flavour and characteristics. The colour is beautiful amber with superb clarity and the aroma offers notes of subtle peach and candied apricot, macadamia or almonds, with hints of oak. The finish is dry with a soft fade.

The Cask Collection is a testament to Don Carlos SIEGERT, son of the brand’s founder, whose vision continues to inspire the House of Angostura’s blenders today.

John Watling’s Rum Tour

The Buena Vista Estate and John Watling’s Distillery serve up craft rum in Downtown Nassau.

________________________________________

John Watling’s Rum, the “Spirit of The Bahamas,” offers complimentary tours at its home, the Buena Vista Estate, in Downtown Nassau. The historic Estate, founded in 1789 and overlooking the harbour, is the site where Bahamians hand-craft John Watling’s small-batch Pale, Amber and Buena Vista rums. At the Estate, John Watling’s features a production and museum-like tour, shopping and signature Bahamian cocktails at its Red Turtle Tavern. Within walking distance from the cruise ship port, the Distillery is located on Delancy Street and is open from 10am-6pm, seven days a week.

The Tour:

The Distillery will be open to visitors daily and will feature complimentary tours showcasing the history and heritage of The Bahamas. The tour begins in the entrance lobby of the Buena Vista house and includes antiques and prints dating back more than 300 years. Photographic exhibits and displays have been provided by the descendants of the Buena Vista’s long list of residents, which includes Royal Governors, Chief Justices and Knights of the British Empire.

The tour then continues to the storehouse where guests get up close and see how the rums are bottled the old-fashioned way by local hands. It offers a unique multisensory experience where guests will see more than 1,000 ageing white oak barrels that fill the air with the aroma of fine rum.

JOHN WATLING’S rum:

More than 175 years of rum-making experience went into creating John Watling’s rum, as five founding members; Pepin and Leon Argamasilla, Jose and Mario Portuondo and Guillermo Garcia-Lay, of John Watling’s Distillery are also sixth generation members of a rum-producing family with more than a half century tie to The Bahamas.

John Watling’s is available as a two-year-old Pale, three-year-old Amber and a five-year-old named after the Buena Vista Estate. The rums are fermented and distilled from hand-cut, freshly pressed sugar cane molasses and all products made at John Watling’s Distillery are handcrafted and hand-packaged by Bahamian hands. The Distillery uses the least amount of mechanization possible without compromising on quality, and even the bottles are adorned with a section of Sisal Plait that is woven by hand in the Bahamian islands of South Andros and Cat Island.

The rums, which began selling this March, are currently only available on New Providence and a very few of the Family Islands, and have been thoroughly embraced by Bahamians and tourists alike; local stores and bars have sold out of the product on a weekly basis and more than 4,000 bottles have been sold.

What’s in a Name:

John Watling was known as the “pious pirate” who sailed the Bahamian seas. He was an English buccaneer from the 17th century who settled on San Salvador Island and named it after himself. He sailed with famous buccaneers such as William Dampier, Woodes Rogers and Bartholomew Sharpe. In 1925 when it was finally determined this was also the island of Columbus’ landing, the name was changed back to San Salvador Island.

JOHN WATLING’S DISTILLERY is located on Delancy Street, within walking distance from the cruise ship port in Downtown Nassau and is easily accessible to both locals and visitors. To plan a visit, tourists should go to www.johnwatlings.com or call (242) 322-2811, or just show up. Tours are free and self-guided. Operating hours are 10am to 6pm seven days a week. Copacabana 1940 Rum Launch

A new luxury rum from Panama is set to launch this week in New York. Say hello to Copacabana 1940.

_____________________________

imageCelebrity Chef Alex Garcia and Restaurateur Spencer Rothschild, partners of Barrio Spirits and the legendary nightclub Copacabana in New York City are introducing an iconic brand to the spirits industry with Copacabana 1940 – a smooth 7 year old Añejo rum. The two industry experts have assembled a team that includes former president and COO of Cruzan Rum International, Jay Maltby, Barrio Spirits’ Director of sales, Robert Rosenthal and the Master Distiller, Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez.

“After many years traveling the world to source the finest rum, I am thrilled to introduce New York to Copacabana 1940 Añejo rum. I am so proud of the experts that have come assembled to create an Añejo rum worthy of bearing the name of the most famous nightclub and beach in the world,” said Rothschild.

Copacabana 1940 is a distilled in Panama and will be distributed in New York City by Royal Wine Corp. The official launch event will take place tomorrow at the world famous Copacabana rooftop located in Times Square. The new rum is inspired by New York City of the 1940′s, a time when the “Big Apple” was becoming the capital of commerce, fashion and music. It was also the year that gave birth to the iconic nightclub … The COPACABANA.

“Rum is enjoying the spotlight, and the light shines brightly on Copacabana 1940 Añejo rum. The partnership with Royal Wine is extremely innovative and we greatly appreciate their drive and determination surrounding our rum,” said Maltby.

This golden rum is made in one of the most important distilleries in the world, Las Cabras in Panama. The central province of Herrera is known for its abundant sugar cane fields that grow in nutrient-rich volcanic soil fed by rivers stemming from mineral-rich mountain springs. This all leads to a rich, balanced, sensual rum with strong hints of citrus and a light caramel and almond finish.

Francisco “Don Pancho” Fernandez is respected worldwide as one of the most experienced master rum distillers. Born in Cuba, Fernandez has been making rum for five decades. His most recent efforts include Zafra, Panamonte, Panama Red, Ron De Jeremy, Bohemio, Cana Brava, YOLO, Debonaire and Origenes and now, Copacabana 1940.

“Copacabana 1940 begins with the finest Panamanian sugarcane. The 7 year blend results in a full bodied, extremely sophisticated and approachable rum. Aged in white oak, it has lovely hints of orange citrus and butterscotch” says Fernandez.

The launch event on July 8th in New York will introduce club owners, restauranteurs, the spirits industry to Copacabana 1940 and a time of glamour and elegance. Don’t miss it.

Angostura Cask Collection

Angostura has announced the launch of No. 1, the first in a new series of limited edition rums.

____________________________________

imageAged in special casks and bottled at 40%, No.1 is the first rum to be released in Angostura’s new Cask Collection. The entire offering is dedicated to “specialty barrel” rums.

The first blend of Angostura No. 1 is made from hand selected rums aged 10 to 12 years. It is then left to mature for an additional year in first fill Bourbon casks at their aging facility in Trinidad.

A multi-national release of No. 1 rolled out in the UK last month with an initial offering of just 20 cases. There will be fewer than 10,000 bottles available globally with upcoming releases in the US and parts of Asia.

Alison Gibb, Angostura International Brand Manager, comments, “It’s the first Angostura premium rum to be aged in our first fill Bourbon barrels and we are confident that this initial interest will continue to grow as the collection expands.”

Angostura has long been a household name known for their iconic Aromatic Bitters, but they have also been creating a strong reputation for themselves in the rum world. They are a distilling powerhouse with several popular brands under their own name and supply bulk rum to countless boutique brands around the world.

Angostura No. 1 is available in specialty liquor shops for $60.

Cruzan Distiller’s Collection

Cruzan rolls out a new look for their most popular product line known as The Distiller’s Collection.

______________________________________

This month, Cruzan Rum unveils the Cruzan Distiller’s Collection, a line of super-premium, blended aged rums. Comprised of Cruzan Estate Diamond Dark Rum and the new Cruzan Estate Diamond Light Rum, along with the popular Cruzan Single Barrel Rum, the collection stays true to the spirit of The Don’t Hurry and doesn’t rush the aging process, waiting until each rum is aged to perfection.

The Cruzan Estate Diamond rums were originally created by Hardy Nelthropp, who served as Cruzan Master Distiller from 1959-2007 and bottled the rum to share with his close friends on St. Croix. Each rum is aged between five and 12 years and, like all Cruzan rums, is made from tropical rainwater, high-quality molasses and distilled to be the cleanest-tasting rum on the market.

“I’m thrilled for Cruzan fans to experience our Distiller’s Collection,” said Gary Nelthropp, President and Master Distiller of Cruzan Rum. “We take great pride in the craftsmanship of our aged rums, and the Cruzan Distiller’s Collection offers consumers the opportunity to enjoy some of my family’s favorite expressions.”

Cruzan Estate Diamond Light Rum is carefully charcoal filtered and contains subtle vanilla and oak cask flavors, while Cruzan Estate Diamond Dark Rum is expertly crafted to bring out the complex flavor of barrel-aged rum. Cruzan Single Barrel Rum, one of the most awarded aged rums on the market, uses a unique blend of vintage rums that have been aged for up to 12 years and bottled one cask at a time. The term “single barrel” refers to the fact that after its initial aging, the rum is picked and blended before it is barreled for a second time in new American oak barrels and slowly aged again. All three rums are equally enjoyable neat, on the rocks or as a base in classic cocktails.

The Distiller’s Collection joins the Cruzan portfolio of rums that include Cruzan Aged Light Rum, Cruzan Aged Dark Rum, Cruzan Black Strap Rum, Cruzan 151 Proof Rum, Cruzan 9 Spiced Rum and 13 flavored rums infused with natural flavors, such as vanilla, key lime, passion fruit, coconut, mango and strawberry. For more information, visit the Cruzan website and follow them on Facebook and Twitter @CruzanRum.

Especial Gets New Look & Taste

Havana Club’s popular Anejo Especial offering is getting a makeover with brand new packaging and recipe.

___________________________________________

Havana Club is highlighting its Cuban roots and high quality with the launch of a new look and new recipe for its Havana Club Añejo Especial expression.

imageThe new recipe, which has been developed by Maestro Ronero, Asbel Morales, uses a unique blending process with aged rums to produce an expression with a rich aroma and taste profile, with notes of vanilla and caramel and an underlying hint of tobacco, cinnamon and orange peel. The rum remains at 40% ABV to ensure that these flavors are enhanced while providing a sweeter taste profile and a smooth drinking experience.

The packaging has also evolved to provide maximum shelf stand-out and convey the premium quality and provenance of Havana Club Añejo Especial. New elements to the design include a font with a handwritten style and an oak barrel effect on the label, which highlight the craftsmanship and Havana Club’s core values of authenticity, quality and tradition.

Havana Club’s Maestro Ronero, Don Asbel Morales, comments: “At the Havana Club distillery in Cuba, we are continuously working on developing new recipes that will appeal to a wide range of rum fans around the world. The new Havana Club Añejo Especial has a distinctive flavour profile due to the unique production process we have adopted, whereby the rum bases are aged in white, young oak barrels before being blended and aged for a second time ahead of bottling. The influence of the barrel ageing is evident in the flavour profile with notes of vanilla and caramel really coming to the fore, which makes it an ideal base for Cuban cocktails, particularly the Cuba Libre.”

Nick Blacknell, International Marketing Director for Havana Club International, says: “We’re delighted with the new Havana Club Añejo Especial – our Maestros Roneros have produced not only what we believe is the best rum for classics such as the Cuba Libre, but also an expression that can attract whisky drinkers looking for equally good, yet more exciting, alternatives to their usual brand. With this new formulation and premium look, we are confident that Havana Club Añejo Especial will satisfy demand from sociable young adults seeking a naturally sweeter taste profile, but for whom authenticity and high quality are equally important purchasing cues.”

The new Havana Club Añejo Especial will launch in Germany in September 2013, priced at 15€ before rolling out globally over the coming year. The launch will be supported by a marketing campaign that highlights its unique product story.

Captain Morgan’s Sherry Oak

A new limited edition Captain Morgan Sherry Oak Finish Spiced Rum hits the market. Get the scoop right here.

________________________________________

In 1671, Captain Henry Morgan led a historic invasion off the shores of Panama. Though five of his ships were lost on the bottom of the Caribbean during this battle, including his flagship The Satisfaction, Morgan earned his mark in history as one of the most renowned privateers of all time.

After almost 350 years, remains of a 17th century fleet, including a hull of a ship, a sword and a barrel, were discovered in 2012 as part of an expedition funded by the Captain Morgan brand. To commemorate Morgan’s legendary battle as well as the recent historic discovery, Captain Morgan has announced the release of its limited edition Captain Morgan Sherry Oak Finish Spiced Rum.

With a growing demand for sherry flavored spirits in the marketplace, the limited edition Captain Morgan Sherry Oak Finish Spiced Rum is finished with Sherry Oak, which results in a rich and flavorful take on the brand’s signature blend. The new limited time offering possesses a smooth yet subtly sweet taste of oak, sherry wine, vanilla, caramel, dark cherry and cocoa, with a slight floral undertone.

Through the brand’s funding of the archaeological expedition and its ongoing commitment to tell the story of the real-life privateer, researchers have been able to derive additional details from the recovered artifacts, which provide a more holistic understanding of what life may have been like for Morgan on the high seas in the 17th century. One such detail is that the recovered barrel most likely housed sherry, considering it was a prominent export during the time – a detail that ultimately led to the creation of the brand’s limited edition offering.

“The life and legacy of Henry Morgan serve as an integral source of inspiration for us as we continue to develop innovative product offerings and creative marketing campaigns,” said Jesse Damashek, Director of Innovation, Diageo North America. “Every adventure, and especially every victory, is one worth celebrating responsibly, and we are proud to offer adult consumers Captain Morgan Sherry Oak Finish Spiced Rum for a limited time.”

The limited edition Captain Morgan Sherry Oak possesses a unique bottle design with a highly-detailed, metallic label. As the liquid leaves the bottle, commemorative artwork and a synopsis of Morgan’s 1671 battle are revealed on the backside of the label.

At 70 proof (35% ABV), Captain Morgan Sherry Oak will be available nationally for a limited time for a suggested retail price of $19.99 for a 750 mL bottle. The limited time offering is best enjoyed on the rocks or mixed with cola for a refreshing new take on the Captain’s signature drink.

Malibu Island Spiced

There’s a rum for everybody.  If you’re looking for one of the low-cal spiced variety, Malibu has you covered.

________________________________________

Malibu has announced that they are entering the spiced rum segment with the launch of Malibu Island Spiced – the first lower calorie, spiced option to appear on retail shelves and back bars throughout the country.

Malibu Island Spiced combines Malibu’s signature blend of Caribbean rum and coconut liqueur with light spices, smoked vanilla, cinnamon and a touch of natural sweetener. The result is a lower calorie, full-flavored spiced rum alternative perfect for social, on the-go women who seek low calorie drink options that don’t sacrifice flavor.

“Nearly half of spiced rum drinkers are women,” noted Lisa McCann, Brand Director for Malibu, Pernod Ricard USA. “But most spiced rum brands communication is directed to men. Malibu Island Spiced addresses the growing demand among adult women for cocktails that taste great and offer the perfect  balance between sweetness and strength without packing on the calories. We are excited to enter the growing spiced segment and be first-to-market with a lower calorie alternative. It’s a double win for Malibu.”

Barcelo Imperial Premium

Barceló celebrates 3 decades of their high end offering with a limited edition bottling called Imperial Premium Blend.

________________________________________

Each year since Miguel Barceló first created Ron Barceló Imperial in 1980, private reserves of this prestigious ten-year-old blended rum were set aside for two years of additional aging. Held in barrels made from selected cuts of white oak, these reserves were blended to create the limited edition Imperial Premium Blend 30 Aniversario.

Only 9,000 bottles of the Imperial Premium Blend are bottled annually, and of that 9,000 only 600 are allocated to the United States where this truly outstanding Dominican rum was recently introduced.

“We wanted to honor the Barceló family tradition of blending the best preserved collection of naturally aged rum, and celebrate three decades of our signature rum, Barceló Imperial. Getting to the highest grade of excellence and seducing the most discerning tastes of our consumers around the world is our core motivation. We believe creativity is an integral part of rum making and this philosophy is evident in every drop of the Imperial Premium Blend,” states Ron Barceló Brand Ambassador, Roberto Jimenez.

During the extensive aging process, the rum achieves an intense amber color, and the aroma is rich with hints of dried fruits, vanilla and caramel coated chocolate. The taste is that of an exquisitely aged rum with notes of mocha, melted toffee and spiced nuts.

Each bottle is hand-numbered with an engraved wooden display pedestal and comes in an embossed collectable tin, making it a very desirable addition to any serious rum enthusiast’s collection.

As a testament to the brand’s outstanding character, it was recently awarded a Double Gold Medal at the 2013 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a superlative 97 rating by the Beverage Testing Institute of Chicago.

Ron Barceló Imperial Premium Blend retails for $120.00 per 750ml bottle and is currently available for sale in Florida, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.

Kenny Chesney has announced that Blue Chair Bay Rum, his recently announced line of premium spirits, will throw launch parties in 18 key cities during his No Shoes Nation tour this spring and summer. These parties, which range from parking lot tailgates to on-premise celebrations, promise to deliver the island-lover’s signature “nowhere to go, nowhere to be” state of mind to rum enthusiasts and music fans across the country.

“So much of the inspiration for my music comes from the places I’ve been, and people I’ve met in the Caribbean,” says Chesney. “I started thinking, ‘What if I could share that sense of escape, and freedom… and fun with friends with everyone! That’s the reason for creating Blue Chair Bay Rum, so I wanted a way to share it beyond the shelf. That’s what we’re – hopefully – bringing people with this rum and these parties.”

The laid-back parties invite like-minded imbibers across the nation to raise a glass of Blue Chair Bay Rum’s White, Coconut and Coconut Spiced flavors in celebration of the anytime, anywhere spirit that defines island life. Locals are invited to sip on signature Blue Chair Bay Rum cocktails, take part in island-themed giveaways and indulge in the singer/songwriter’s “check your troubles at the shore” way of life.

Malibu understands women and is actively talking to this increasingly important segment – 66% of Malibu shoppers are women.

Malibu is supporting the launch of Island Spiced with an aggressive digital and social media marketing plan as well as retail and on-premise activation aimed at generating interest and trial among adult women consumers.

Malibu Island Spiced, 30% ABV and 70 calories/serving, will be available in 1.75L, 1L, 750ml, 375ml and 50ml sizes and will retail for a suggested price of $16.99/750ml.

Introducing Black Barrel

Mount Gay has announced the launch of Black Barrel, a new blend released in celebration of their 310th anniversary.

________________________________________

For more than three centuries, Mount Gay Rum has perpetuated a long-standing Barbadian tradition, producing the world’s oldest, refined rum. Only the finest sugar cane molasses and pure water filtered through the coral heart of the island are selected to create Mount Gay Rum. Mount Gay Black Barrel boasts double pot distillation and maturing in bourbon oak barrels which are combined with the harmonious blending orchestrated by the Master Blender to create an outstanding rum.

All Mount Gay rums are made from a blend of single column and double copper pot distillates and matured in toasted oak barrels. Black Barrel has a higher proportion of double distillates and, after hand selection by Master Blender Allen Smith, Black Barrel is the only marque finished in charred bourbon oak barrels. The result is a bold tasting rum with notes of pepper, spice and wood that provide remarkable body and fullness. On the nose, Black Barrel is a blend of fruit, oaky vanilla and sweet caramel.

According to Smith, Black Barrel is “Ready when it’s ready, not before.” Smith, who oversees the brand’s maturation facility in Barbados’ parish of St. Lucy, joined Mount Gay distilleries in 1991, and was instrumental in the development of the award-winning Extra Old blend. Smith continues, “Rum blending is an art passed down for generations, and I am honored to continue the brand’s focus on innovation and refinement with the introduction of Black Barrel. We are thrilled to give our consumers an exceptional, high-quality spirit to appreciate for years to come.”

In recognition of its anniversary, new packaging will be introduced to the entire Mount Gay portfolio of premium rums: 1703 Old Cask Selection, Extra Old, Eclipse, and Eclipse Silver. Black Barrel continues the brand’s growth in the U.S. retailing for $29.99, and is the first rum to adorn the new packaging.

86 Co. Debuts New Rum

The 86 Co. launches four unique spirits designed to elevate cocktail making.  Read on…

_________________________________________

Paying homage to the profession that they have toiled in for years, industry veterans Simon Ford, Jason Kosmas and Dushan Zaric have announced the formation of The 86 Co. with a portfolio of spirits intended to meet the needs of bartenders who are elevating cocktail making to an art form.  Four specially-formulated spirits, including Ford’s Gin, Aylesbury Duck Vodka, Cana Brava Rum and Tequila Cabeza , have launched in select markets, and are already appearing at some of the most prestigious bars in the country.  From Texas and California to New York and Chicago, The 86 Co. is making waves amongst the bartender illuminati who desire less marketing fluff and more exceptional spirits that deliver killer drinks – whether serving a novice bar patron or a sophisticated cocktail connoisseur

Founded by award-winning industry veteran Simon Ford and enlisting the invaluable expertise of Jason Kosmas and Dushan Zaric of Employees Only and Macao Trading Co. fame, The 86 Co. was created in conjunction with some of the best distillers and distilleries from around the world. Conversations within the bartending community inspired the style, flavor profile and taste of the spirits, which are versatile, full-bodied and above all have been made for mixing.

“Collectively, Jason, Dushan and I have been in the business for a combined 60 years, so I’d say we know our way around a shaker, muddler and other bartending accoutrements,” said Ford. “Having made this our chosen profession, our products are distilled with an infinite understanding of function, efficiency, mixability and quality of ingredients, which is why we tapped into our network of bartending colleagues to ensure we were delivering upon their expectations

CANA BRAVA RUM
Made in Panama, Cana Brava is a three-year old aged and filtered rum from local wild sugar cane grown in the mineral rich volcanic soil of the Herrera region of Panama. It is continuously distilled in a classic 1922 copper and brass still at the Las Cabres Distillery by Master Distiller and former Minister of Cuban Rum, Francisco ” Don Pancho ” J. Fernandez. The rum is aged in a combination of new un-charred American oak and used American Whisky barrels, and then blended with older rums and carbon filtered to create a light and complex rum. To quote Don Pancho , “rum as that we drunk in Cuba when I was a young man.” (SRP:$34.99)

FORDS GIN
Distilled in London at Thames Distillers, Fords Gin is a collaboration between 8th generation Master Distiller Charles Maxwell and Simon Ford . A mix of nine botanicals, the gin starts with a traditional base of juniper & coriander seed and balanced by citrus (bitter orange, lemon & grapefruit peel), florals (jasmine flower & orris) and spices (angelica & cassia). Steeped for 15 hours, the botanicals deliver an aromatic, fresh and floral spirit with elegant notes of orange blossom that plays beautifully in classic gin cocktails. (SRP:$37.99)

TEQUILA CABEZA
With the explosion of the tequila category, the entrance of Tequila Cabeza is a welcome addition given its compelling back story and production method that offers up an agave-forward spirit that works well both neat and in tequila-centric cocktails.  For five generations, the Vivanco family has been cultivating agave in the Los Altos region of Jalisco – having built their distillery, El Ranchito, on the edge of their 800-acre mountainside field in Arandas.  On the nose, there’s a bouquet of highland agave that captures both the earthiness and the honey while adding complex layers of green vegetables and a healthy dose of minerality. Full-bodied with a velvety mouth feel, Tequila Cabeza finishes with a light, bitter citrus, cooked agave flavors and black pepper. (SRP:$42.99)

Bayou Rum Launch

Bayou Rum announces a big distribution deal and is set for a Louisiana release this summer.

_________________________________________

Louisiana Spirits proudly announces Bayou Rum as the brand name of their soon to be released rum made from Louisiana sugar cane. They also report that Republic National will be their exclusive distribution partner for Louisiana.

“Louisiana was known as ‘The Bayou State’ while growing up on Contraband Bayou. Good memories inspired us to celebrate our state by naming our product Bayou Rum. When we tested the name in Louisiana and around the USA it got great reviews. Consumers chose Bayou Rum because it is easy to say, easy to remember, and easy to imagine what we’re about: living life to its fullest and having some fun along the way. We’re really excited about Bayou Rum and we look forward to the ‘inaugural toast’ with the citizens of Louisiana!” said Trey Litel, President of Louisiana Spirits.

Soon you can taste the Spirit of Louisiana with Bayou Rum.  The Louisiana Spirits craft distillery is perfecting the first two Bayou Rum expressions. Silver Bayou Rum is handcrafted in a traditional pot still using 100% natural Louisiana cane sugar & molasses. Taste the smooth and subtle character of Silver Bayou Rum over ice or in your favorite rum cocktail. Spiced Bayou Rum is also handcrafted in a traditional pot still for full flavor and then blended with delicious natural Louisiana ingredients – it’s sure to spice up your favorite cocktail! Both varieties are expected to be available at the distillery and throughout the state by early June.

“We’re creating great tasting rums and we’re proud to be part of the internationally renowned Cajun culinary culture. For us, it all starts with local ingredients. We’ve found the fresh raw materials to be a big differentiator in terms of taste. Louisiana molasses and the raw unrefined Louisiana sugar crystals we use, along with our historic “sugar house” recipe, have helped us to create more flavorful rums for sipping that’ll mix exceptionally well for cocktails too. We can’t wait for rum drinkers to experience Bayou Rum,” said Jeff Murphy, Head Distiller at Louisiana Spirits.

Very little rum is produced domestically. With Bayou Rum, Louisiana Spirits is recapturing the state’s historic role as a sugar cane rum producer. Louisiana is the second largest producer of sugar cane in the United States. Louisiana Spirits is positioned to add value to the state’s harvest by utilizing sugar cane as its primary ingredient, and investing in an appealing cultural visitor destination. The company is initially creating 15 to 20 direct full-time jobs and additional economic opportunities for Louisiana farmers, contractors, partners, and suppliers.

USA Craft distilling and the Rum category are growing. “We see a huge potential for Bayou Rum’s success because consumers want authentic local brands. We’re excited to tell our quality story in Louisiana and beyond!” Litel added.

South Sea US Launch

South Sea Rum, a small batch brand from Perth, Australia, is making a big splash with their North American launch.  Produced by the West Australian Distilling Company, South Sea is made with a balance of time honored distilling methods accompanied by high tech instrumentation.

Produced from the juice of hand selected Queensland sugarcane, pure tropical rainforest water and signature yeast, South Sea Rum is distilled and aged in American Oak barrels for a minimum of two years.  It is in the style of a classic agricole, light in color and has a dry flavor profile with long, leathery finish.

South Sea is currently available in New York and Rhode Island and will launch in New Jersey next month.  By the beginning of 2013 distribution will expand down the East Coast from ME, NH, VT, MA, PA, DE, DC, MD, VA, and SC . The brand will arrive in Georgia and Florida in February.  South Sea is 40% abv and will cost (on average) $34.99 for a 750ml bottle.

Kirk & Sweeney Launch

A new Dominican rum hits the market! Kirk & Sweeney is the latest offering from 35 Maple Street.

__________________________________________

35 Maple Street, the spirits division of The Other Guys (TOG), has announced the release of Kirk and Sweeney Rum, a handcrafted, 12-year-old premium liquor. Kirk and Sweeney becomes the third spirit introduced by 35 Maple Street as it continues to expand its niche in the growing cocktail movement, which has spawned a “gold rush” of cocktail bars and underground speakeasies in urban areas across America over the past five years.

“Kirk and Sweeney was the name of a wooden schooner that was best known for smuggling rum from the Caribbean to the Northeast United States during Prohibition,” said August Sebastiani, TOG president. “There’s a historical bent for each of our spirits, so we thought naming the rum after Kirk and Sweeney was appropriate.”

The rum is made in the Dominican Republic and aged for 12 years in American oak barrels. Its unique packaging – featuring a raised cork in an elegant low-set bottle – was inspired by short, round 18th-century bottles, which typically contained rum.

“Playing off the concept of global navigation, we silkscreened an antique nautical map of the main rum smuggling route around the circumference of the bottle,” Sebastiani said. “The neck features custom hand-numbering. Along with the ornate logo, the photo of the ship and a safety seal that is printed to look like nautical brass, the overall design serves as a reminder of the risk so many were willing to take for a good taste of rum during the 1920’s.”

Kirk and Sweeney Rum, which retails for $40 per 750ml bottle, became available nationwide in restaurants and high-end wine and bottle shops on Dec. 3. It joins Uncle Val’s Botanical Gin and Masterson’s Straight Rye Whiskey in the 35 Maple Street portfolio. The company will also introduce a small-batch bourbon in the near future.

Stolen Launches Dark Rum

Stolen Rum introduces new Dark Rum and claims another international award. Check it out.

_________________________________________

Every family has a dark horse and in October the guys from Stolen Rum welcomed theirs. With the new addition just two months out of the gate it has already followed in the footsteps of its predecessors and been awarded an accolade at an international spirits competition. On October the 1st, Stolen Rum added Stolen Dark Rum to its New Zealand portfolio. On November the 13th Stolen Dark Rum was awarded a Silver Medal at the New York International Spirits Competition.

In the two and a half years since Stolen Rum launched it has received international awards for all of its current products. Co-founders Jamie Duff and Roger Holmes say it’s an honor to know international experts believe their rums are world class. Roger, the palate behind the blends, says, “When blending each variation I believe the final products to be good quality rums, I trust my tongue to tell me this. It’s gratifying to know international spirits experts believe the same.”

The introduction of the dark rum is a move by the New Zealand rum company to offer New Zealand rum drinkers a quality dark rum. With the gold, white and over-proof variations under their belt, Co-founder and CEO Jamie Duff explains it made sense for them to work closely with their distribution partners, Beam NZ, to create a quality dark rum offering for New Zealand’s largest rum category. Beam and Stolen Rum joined forces in April 2011 and together have delivered over 7,000 cases to the mouths of New Zealanders.

Historically, dark rum was a rough molasses based spirit that used high levels of caramel to cover a poorly produced product. Nowadays it can be a well-produced spirit that is aged in black charred oak barrels which contribute colour and flavour. New Zealand has a long and sultry history with dark rum; the New Zealand navy was the last navy in the world to abolish the daily rum ration in 1990. Over 70,000 cases of dark rum are consumed in New Zealand every year, over half the total rum market.

While dark rum in New Zealand is generally a lower quality product, the Stolen Rum team have worked exceptionally hard to produce a world-class dark rum in line with Stolen Rum’s other products. Stolen Dark Rum is a blend of selected dark molasses based rums carefully blended by the hand of Stolen Rum Co-founder Roger Holmes who says ‘this blend is one that pays homage to the traditional dark rums that I was brought up with. It’s richer in flavour and aroma than our other rums, but incredibly smooth. It’s such a great rum, one I am really excited about.”

Stolen Dark Rum stands out with a contemporary, low-fi aesthetic which Marketing Manager Katie Du Fall says will entice a new breed of rum drinker. ‘Dark rum traditionally was a real rogues vice, a devils drink; it was honest and to the point. We have produced a world-class dark rum that is an ode to these dark rums of the past and the rascals that drank them. A stripped-back, candid aesthetic encasing a superb dark rum, it’s the dark horse of our Stolen stable’. Kelvin Soh, the designer behind Stolen Rum’s product packaging, crafted the Stolen Dark Rum packaging to pay tribute to this devious and unforgiving history of dark rum.

Globally, dark rum is making a resurgence and shaking the stigma of its dark past with bartenders from cocktail capitals all over the world turning to the rich flavours of dark rum for the classic rum cocktails such as the Mai Tai and traditional punch recipes. Priced in line with other dark rum’s in the market, Stolen Dark Rum will retail for approximately $39.99 – 42.99. Stolen Dark Rum is a world-class and internationally awarded product at an accessible price point.
