The article tries lightly to defend that sailors were still capable even with the tot but the most important fact to defend this is this. With the tot of Rum the British Navy was the superior navy in its day and was the driving force that allowed the British Empire to flourish and exist. Overall good article, Im off to make me some grog this afternoon.

  2. Chip Dykstra Says:

A very important aspect of the daily allotment of the British naval rum was the inclusion of lime juice and sugar to flavour the rum. (Hence the term, “Limey” for British seaman.)

The daily dose of lime juice is thought to be a large factor in the prevention of scurvy amongst the sailors of the British Navy. Thus the daily tot is considered to be an important reason why the British Navy was the most powerful naval force of the day.
