Hi David & Dr Bamboo:

I quite agree, that the Cockspur 12 is (for my palate) better than The Mount Gay XO. I also found these two rums to have a their similarities; heavy oak & tobacco, and burnt molasses in the taste profile. I guess I found the Mount Gay a tad more bitter which, in the end, did me in as I reviewed it.

I know I’m going against the grain here, but I prefer this over Mount Gay XO (Which I consider a similar product…A fine rum to be sure, but perhaps a bit overrated IMHO).

Great review, and count me among the people who appreciate the minimal label design (for whatever that’s worth .

Didn’t like it at first but Cockspur 12 grew on me over time. It’s a bold rum with enough character to stand up to Barbados’ best.

Thanks Jason,

I have found that when I rate the rums from the islands, I often detect more oak and tobacco, than others do. I did recognize the other flavours and complexities of the rum and my score reflected those observations. (My 85 score reflects a rum than can be sipped neat, but that I found more enjoyable mixed.)

It’s great that you are willing to defend your palate and tell me when you disagree. It reminds us all that these reviews must be tempered by one’s own experience.

The packaging of this one intrigues me. I noticed it the first time for its simplicity and the beautiful copper rum showing through unobstructed by a big ugly label. A cool change from the norm.

Nice review Chip, but I’ve got to say that I would rate Cockspur 12 a little higher. It has just the right amount of barrel for my pallete and the other notes remain quite distinct.
