Forest – perhaps it is not amazing that we share many, and I mean many, of the same fine rums you listed. Allow me to single out just a few that we find irresistable:

Mount Gay Extra Old
Seales 10 and/or Doorly’s XO
Ron Matusalem Gran Reserva
Barbancourt Five Star (especially now)
Rum San Pablo

And we agree on some of your concerns, eg. the corporatization of rum. But I think you’ve left out the elephant in the room, namely that most, most rum, is secretly altered with unadmitted additives and/or artificial or natural flavorings.

Some obviously flavored rums are even entered – in the non-flavored, aged rum category – in the faux “rum competitions” held by the usual promoters. It’s nuts.

In other words, most rum is not pure rum, yet is promoted as though it were. This is what separates rum from being a true noble spirit like single-malt whiskeys.

This is a great concern in the industry. One of the leading proponents of truly pure rum is Richard Seale – one of the great distillers and producers of fine Barbadian rums.

So Forrest, my question to you is this – what is your take on this unfortunate practice?
